Jeff Samardzija Strikes Out Seven In Second Rehab Start

d’Arnaud collects two hits in 10-1 loss to El Paso

WEST SACRAMENTO, CA — Giants’ right-hander Jeff Samardzija made his second successful rehab start on Thursday, but the Sacramento River Cats (33-40) fell to the El Paso Chihuahuas (36-37) 10-1 for their fifth straight loss.

Samardzija kept the game close through four innings as the 11-year veteran struck out seven and walked none while surrendering two runs. But the River Cats’ bullpen would allow eight runs in the final five frames, including five in a tough outing for righty Jose Valdez, as the game quickly got out of hand.

First baseman Chase d’Arnaud’s 14th multi-hit game of the season led the River Cats offensively as his fifth-inning single knocked in the team’s only run of the game.

Lefty Matt Gage (3-5, 6.10) will be on the hill for Sacramento in game two of the series while El Paso will counter with right-hander Luis Perdomo (4-2, 3.34). First pitch is set for 7.05 p.m. (PT).
