Sacramento Republic FC Will Play MLS Club LA Galaxy On June 28 In Fifth Round Of Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup

Republic FC, one of three non-MLS teams remaining in the Open Cup, will travel to LA for their first-ever Fifth Round match.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.  – Sacramento Republic FC will travel south to take on MLS side LA Galaxy on Wednesday, Jun. 28 in the Fifth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at the StubHub Center Track Stadium. This is the first time that Republic FC has advanced to the Fifth Round.  They are one of just three non-MLS clubs to reach the Round of 16 in this year’s competition, joining FC Cincinnati (USL) and Miami FC (NASL).

This will be the first-ever competitive match between Republic FC and LA Galaxy.  The winner of the match will travel to face the winner of the San Jose Earthquakes-Seattle Sounders FC matchup.

Republic FC is no stranger to LA Galaxy, having faced their USL side LA Galaxy II 14 times in the last three years, including twice in the USL playoffs.  Republic FC holds a 7-3-4 all-time record against LA Galaxy II, with all previous matches being played against former Los Dos and current LA Galaxy head coach Curt Onalfo. Most significantly, Republic FC defeated Los Dos 3-2 in the USL Cup Semifinals in a match dubbed “The Miracle at Bonney” on their way to their 2014 USL Championship.

Tickets will be available for purchase for Republic FC fans and supporters that plan to travel to the match.  Tickets on-sale date and time to be announced soon.

Sacramento Republic FC To Host Nor Cal Rival San Jose Earthquakes In Preseason Friendly On Mar. 22

Match will be the second of two meetings between the clubs in the 2017 preseason.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.Sacramento Republic FC will host the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday, Mar. 22, in the second of two 2017 preseason friendlies between the Northern California rivals. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Bonney Field. Tickets for the match go on sale Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 10 a.m.

“We look forward to bringing the Earthquakes to Sacramento for the third consecutive preseason,” said Republic FC President and Co-Founder Warren Smith. “After three years of affiliation, the real fun begins this year as we will look to propel our rivalry to the next level both this year and for years to come in the MLS.”

The two clubs will meet for their first friendly this preseason today, Feb. 25 at Avaya Stadium before completing their preseason home-and-home series on Mar. 22. This will be the third consecutive season that Republic FC has hosted San Jose with the Quakes winning each of the last two matches by a single goal.

Despite being rivals, the clubs have worked closely and were affiliates from 2014-2016. As a part of the affiliations multiple Earthquakes players were loaned to Republic FC, including Sacramento-area natives Tommy Thompson and Adam Jahn. Republic FC midfielder JJ Koval was also loaned to Republic FC on several occasions before eventually signing with the USL club prior to the 2016 season.

The two preseason friendlies will be the sixth and seventh meetings between Republic FC and the Quakes since 2014. The clubs have met in preseason friendlies as well as in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, most memorably in 2015 when the two clubs battled for 120 minutes only to have the match decided in penalties.

The match is a part of the 2017 Republic FC Season Ticket Package. Tickets will go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28 on Ticketmaster.com. For more information on the 2017 season, visit SacRepublicFC.com.

Republic FC wasted no time in adding a second goal as they scored again in the 12th minute. This time midfielder Gabe Gonzalez was the beneficiary of a Stewart cross into the box. The Sol would get a goal back in the 26th minute. Forward Omar Nuno received a long ball from the midfield and made a turn on goal. Nuno then sent a driven right-footed shot into the upper-corner of the net, past Republic FC keeper Dominik Jakubek.

Stewart would add a second goal just before halftime in the 43rd minute when a through ball up the middle that went through a defender’s legs. Stewart, who was making an attacking run, found himself onside and in perfect position to whip a left-footed shot around Ornelas and into the back of the net for his second goal of the match. Stewart made an attacking run up the middle and Iwasa sent a low cross on the ground to an unmarked Stewart. The Republic FC forward slid to reach the pass and sent a right-footed shot into the back of the net for his third goal of the match and a 4-1 lead for Republic FC.

Sol forward Nuno scored his second goal of the match in the 73rd minute as he found space behind the defense. Jesus Arroyo sent a through ball into the box, Nuno controlled the ball and promptly slid a shot past Jakubek to make it a 4-2 match.

The Sol had a chance to pull even closer in the 77th minute after Jakubek was called for a foul in the box resulting in a penalty. Sol captain Taylor Varnadore stepped up to the penalty spot and proceeded to send a laser shot off the outside of the right post to keep the score 4-2.
