Sacramento Republic FC Defeats LA Galaxy II 2-1

Sacramento Republic FC use goals from Luis Espino and Villyan Bijev to erase an early deficit and defeat LA Galaxy II 2-1 in front of sold-out crowd at Papa Murphy’s Park.

Los Dos started the match out with a bang. Forward Ethan Zubak scored in the first 10 seconds, a USL record for fastest goal, beating the previous held record of Jordan Hamilton’s 18th second strike for Wilmington Hammerheads FC in 2014. Midfielder Alejandro Covarrubias took the opening kickoff and sent it long to Zubak who headed the ball down and sent a dipping shot from about 25 yards out that went up and over Dominik Jakubek and into the back of the net.

Republic FC would answer back with a goal in the 26th minute. Forward Sammy Ochoa attacked down the right side, getting all the way to the touchline. Ochoa dragged the ball back to his left foot and sent a curling cross to the far post. Midfielder Luis Espino, making his Republic FC debut tonight, went unmarked at the far post as he sent his header into the back of the net for the equalizer.  The score would remain 1-1 going into the half.

Tyler Blackwood had a glorious chance to put Republic FC up a goal in the 59th minute when he used his speed to blow past the Los Dos defense. Blackwood took three touches towards keeper Eric Lopez, who had to come off his line to stop the attack. Blackwood blasted a low shot, but Lopez slid and deflected the breakaway chance out of harm’s way.

Republic FC would find the go-ahead goal in the 61st minute. Midfielder Villyan Bijev had the ball at his feet in the center of the pitch, 25 yards away from goal. He picked his head up and curled a right-footed shot past the defenders in his way and a diving Lopez for his second goal for Republic FC and putting the home side ahead 2-1.

Second-half substitute Harry Williams nearly added a third goal in the 89th minute. Williams ran onto a long through ball and beat the defense as he headed for goal. Lopez came rushing off his line to cut down the angle for Williams to shoot at. Williams sent a left-footed shot on goal, but Lopez went to ground to make the save. The match ended a few minutes later with Republic FC securing the three points with a 2-1 victory over their rivals LA Galaxy II.

“We looked dangerous and we deserved to win,” said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle after the victory. “We have shown great character this season. To come back when you fall behind, it shows character and we’ve got that. There are no easy games in this league.”

Republic FC continues their four-match home stand when they host Oklahoma City Energy FC on Saturday, Sept. 23.  Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Papa Murphy’s Park.  Tickets are available at SacRepublicFC.com.

Sacramento Republic FC Defeat LA Galaxy II 3-2

Sacramento Republic FC power past LA Galaxy II behind goals from Jeremy Hall, Tyler Blackwood and Trevin Caesar and a big save from Evan Newton.

Sacramento Republic FC picked up right where they left off coming out strong against LA Galaxy II.  In just the 10th minute, Republic FC would earn their first chance in the form of a penalty.  Defender James Kiffe drove past his mark before taking the ball all the way down the left side to the touchline and sending a left-footed cross toward the middle.  Kiffe’s cross did not find a Republic FC player, but instead found the hand of a Los Dos defender, earning Republic FC an early penalty.  Midfielder Jeremy Hall stepped up to take the penalty, hitting a low driven shot toward the right side of the goal.  Los Dos keeper Eric López guessed right and was able to get his hand on the ball, but Hall hit the shot too hard, powering the ball past López and into the net, putting Republic FC ahead 1-0 early.

Republic FC continued to press, doubling their lead just three minutes later.  Midfielder Agustin Cazarez found space on the left side of the field before sending a looping cross toward a streaking Tyler Blackwood in the middle of the box.  The cross bent around the Los Dos defense allowing Blackwood to just stick his foot out and poke the ball into the right side of the net to put Republic FC ahead 2-0.

Defender Elliott Hord helped set up Republic FC’s third goal of the night in just the 18th minute.  Hord drove past the defense on the right side before sending a ball into the box.  Forward Wilson Kneeshaw was able to run onto the ball, sending a one-touch backheel pass to Trevin Caesar, who was trailing the play.  Caesar one-touched his left-footed shot toward the near post past a diving López and into the back of the net to give Republic FC the 3-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff Los Dos looked to have struck back.  A long ball seemed to have played Raul Mendiola into a one-on-one situation with Evan Newton.  The Republic FC keeper beat Mendiola to the ball, but was only able to knock the ball.  Newton was quick to his feet and was able to deflect the ball off Tyler Turner who was following the play.  The deflection fell to Adonis Amaya whose shot was blocked by Chris Christian, but the ball found the feet of Justin Dhillon.  The forward’s shot was deemed to have touched the hand of Christian giving Los Dos a penalty.  Amaya stepped up to take the penalty, driving a low left-footed shot just to the left of Newton, but the keeper got down quick to make what proved to be a huge save in the match keeping the score 3-0, which would hold going into the half.

Despite Republic FC coming out strong again in the second half, it was Los Dos who were able to get a goal back in the 54th minute.  After a long clearance was batted around in the middle of the field, Amaya was able to recover the ball and play Dhillon free and into a one-on-one scenario with Newton.  Dhillon opted to keep his shot low, beating the on-rushing Newton and into the back of the net, making the score 3-1.

In the 70th minute, Jonathan Hernandez found space on the right side near the center circle before sending a long ball forward ahead of the defense.  Hord was unable to clear the ball away and substitute forward Adrián Vera ran onto the ball into the box, flicking it up and over Newton and into the goal making the score 3-2.

Republic FC looked as though they might put the game away in the 89th minute after substitute forward Gabe Gissie shook off a defender to put himself in a one-on-one situation with López.  Gissie unleashed a rocket shot that beat the keeper, but defender Jean Engola had recovered to cover the back post and was able to slide and deflect the ball away.

Republic FC would finish out the match and move into sole possession of third place in the USL standings.  Republic FC will remain in Southern California as they take on LA Galaxy (MLS) in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wed. Jun. 28.  Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at the StubHub Center Track Stadium.

Match Preview: Sacramento Republic FC Vs. LA Galaxy II

Sacramento Republic FC (13-8-7, 46 pts) take on LA Galaxy II (14-11-3, 45 pts) in a USL Western Conference Quarterfinal on Saturday, September 26. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PDT at Bonney Field.

The match will be the fifth time that Republic FC and LA Galaxy II will meet in 2015. Republic FC won the first three matchups before Los Dos claimed their lone victory over Republic FC on July 11. Republic FC hold a 6-2-1 all-time record against LA Galaxy II.

Republic FC and Los Dos met in last year’s USL Playoffs on September 20, 2014, in a semifinal now dubbed by Republic FC fans as the Miracle at Bonney. LA Galaxy II forward Charlie Rugg scored a first half brace, giving Los Dos the 2-0 halftime lead. Republic FC midfielder Rodrigo Lopez then scored a second half, set piece hat trick converting two penalties and a stoppage time free kick to give Republic FC a 3-2 victory and advance them into the USL Championship match.

Republic FC enter the match undefeated in their last seven matches after playing to their second consecutive scoreless draw on Tuesday. Republic FC recorded back-to-back scoreless draws for the first time in franchise history.

Goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek recorded his third consecutive shutout against Orange County Blues FC on Tuesday. The shutout was the ninth this season by Republic FC, tying the mark that they set last season. Jakubek has allowed only one goal in his four USL starts this season, and has not allowed a goal in 294 consecutive minutes.

The back line has been a crucial part of the shutout streak for Republic FC. Defenders Emrah Klimenta, Mickey Daly and Nemanja Vuković and defensive midfielder Ivan Mirković lead the club in minutes and appearances. Each has played over 2,000 USL minutes this season and appeared in over 25 matches. Klimenta, Daly and Vuković have all appeared in over 50 USL matches as members of Republic FC over two seasons, the only other player to reach that mark is Lopez.

LA Galaxy II enter the match after defeating Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 1-0 on Saturday, September 19. Forward Ariel Lassiter scored in the 10th minute and then was sent off right before halftime. The short-handed Galaxy II was able to hold on to the lead and clinch the fifth seed in the Western Conference Playoffs.

Due to the red card Lassiter will be suspended for the match, leaving Los Dos without their leading forward from the regular season. Lassiter leads the club in goals (11) and points (23) during the regular season.

Los Dos has plenty of firepower to make up for the loss of Lassiter. Forward Jack McBean and midfielders Andre Auras and Raul Mendiola have been important contributors all season. McBean is second on the club in goals (6) and assists (5), while Mendiola leads the club with eight assists and has added four goals. Auras has three goals and four assists on the season.

The winner of the match will travel to Southern California to take on Orange County Blues FC in the Western Conference Semifinals.

The match will be streamed live at SacRepublicFC.com/matchday via the USL YouTube channel. Updates of the match will be provided via Twitter @SacRepublicFC or using #SACvLA. Tickets to the match are still available at Ticketmaster.com.
