Sacramento Republic FC Sign Defender Chris Christian

Defender played with Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC and Atlanta Silverbacks FC last season.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.Sacramento Republic FC have agreed to a contract with free agent defender Chris Christian for the 2016 USL season. Christian has played in the USL, NASL and PDL as well as overseas in Ghana and Poland.

“Chris first caught my eye in the two games we played against Switchbacks FC. He played a major role in the matches and was very dominant in the 18-yard box. That was when I first took note of him,” said Sacramento Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle.

Buckle continued, “The minute he become available, we were very interested in bringing him to the club. He is a good defender, a good leader. He is a very powerful center half, although he has a nice left foot on him. Chris gives us a nice balance in the center half position, as well as the holding role in midfield. He is serious about his football and excited to be joining our club.”

Christian joins Sacramento Republic FC after splitting time between Atlanta Silverbacks FC (NASL) and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (USL) in 2015. He scored one goal in four matches for Silverbacks FC including two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup matches, before joining Switchbacks FC on loan. Christian appeared in five matches for Switchbacks FC during their inaugural season, playing 425 minutes.

The 6-foot-1-inch defender also spent time with Liberty Professionals FC of the Ghanaian Premier League and Motor Lubin, a Polish fourth division team. In college, Christian played over 60 matches for Villanova, scoring four goals and recording an assist.

Sacramento Republic FC preseason training camp will commence on Feb. 1, 2016. For more information, including Christian’s full profile, visit SacRepublicFC.com.
