Oakland Raiders Sign Dorleant And Holsey; Waive Cheevers and Townsend

NAPA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders have signed free agents DB Makinton Dorleant and CB Joshua Holsey, the club announced Tuesday.

Dorleant re-joins the Raiders having spent the offseason program with the team after signing as a reserve/future free agent this past January. Dorleant originally joined the club as a member of the practice squad ahead of the team’s regular season finale in 2018. The 5-foot-11, 182-pound defensive back also made stops with the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs last season while spending his first two years (2016-17) in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers. Over his career, Dorleant has appeared in four contests.

A native of Naples, Fla., Dorleant played three seasons (2013-15) at Northern Iowa, starting 39-of-40 games with the program. As a Panther, he compiled 138 tackles (104 solo), two interceptions, 30 passes defensed, six forced fumbles and two fumbles recoveries. 

Holsey, a former seventh-round selection (235th overall) in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins, joins the Raiders for his third year in the NFL after spending his first two with the Redskins. Over his first two years, Holsey has appeared in 13 games, seeing action primarily on special teams while adding two tackles and one fumble recovery on defense.

A native of Fairburn Ga., the 5-foot-11, 195-pound Holsey appeared in 44 games and made 31 starts during his career (2012-16) at Auburn. With the Tigers, he compiled 118 tackles (96), four interceptions and 19 passes defensed.

In corresponding moves, the Raiders have waived CB Hamp Cheevers and P Johnny Townsend.

Townsend was drafted by the club in the fifth round (173rd overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. In his lone season with the team, Townsend appeared in all 16 contests and punted 70 times for 3,022 yards (43.2 avg.) while recording a 38.3 net average and pinning the opponent inside the 20-yard line 17 times.

Oakland Raiders Claim CB Hamp Cheevers

NAPA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders have claimed CB Hamp Cheevers via waivers from the Atlanta Falcons, the club announced Sunday.

Cheevers, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound cornerback out of Boston College, joins the Raiders after originally being signed by the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent this past May. Cheevers most recently spent a week in training camp with Falcons and appeared in the team’s preseason Week 1 contest.

A native of Trenton, Fla., Cheevers played three seasons (2016-18) at Boston College, appearing in 30 games and tallying 56 tackles (36 solo), including 2.5 for loss, nine interceptions including one returned for a touchdown, 20 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. As a junior in 2018, he posted career highs in nearly every major defensive category, notching 39 stops (27), seven interceptions, 14 passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery en route to All-ACC First Team honors.

In a corresponding move, the Raiders have placed CB D.J. Killings on the Reserve/Injured List.

Oakland Raiders Sign TE Brandon Barnes

NAPA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent TE Brandon Barnes, the club announced Friday.

Barnes originally entered the NFL in 2017 as an undrafted free agent out of Alabama State. The 6-foot-5, 256-pound tight end signed with the Detroit Lions following the 2017 NFL Draft and spent the offseason program with the club before finishing his rookie training camp with the New York Jets. Barnes spent the majority of his rookie season as a free agent, but signed to the Lions’ practice squad ahead of the team’s regular season finale and later signed as a reserve/future free agent with the club. Barnes has not appeared in an NFL contest and was not with a team last season after being waived before training camp.

A native of Phenix, City, Ala., Barnes played four years (2013-16) at Alabama State and appeared in 38 contests with the program, compiling 29 receptions for 436 yards and added six receiving touchdowns. He recorded five receptions for 85 yards and one touchdown as a senior with the Hornets, while setting personal bests in 2015 with 13 receptions for 199 yards and three touchdowns.

In a corresponding move, the Raiders have waived CB Isaiah Langley, who signed with the team this past June as an undrafted free agent.

Oakland Raiders Sign RB Mack Brown

NAPA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent RB Mack Brown, the club announced Saturday.

Brown, a 5-foot-11, 213-pound running back, joins the Raiders after most recently spending a portion of the 2018 season on the Washington Redskins’ practice squad. Brown began his career as an undrafted free agent in 2015 and later signed with the Houston Texans. He spent the majority of his rookie season on the Redskins’ practice squad and appeared in 12 games over three seasons (2015-17) with the club prior to his stint with the Minnesota Vikings (2017-18). Over his career, Brown has appeared in 13 games, compiling 16 rush attempts for 111 yards and one score, while adding two receptions for nine yards.

A native of Clarkston, Ga., Brown attended Florida for five seasons (2010-14) and appeared in 49 games before entering the NFL. During his time with the Gators, he recorded 210 carries for 805 yards and four touchdowns, while hauling in 18 passes for an additional 78 yards.

In a corresponding move, the Raiders have waived G Lukayus McNeil, who signed with the team this past spring as an undrafted free agent.

Oakland Raiders Claim WR Jordan Lasley

NAPA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders have claimed WR Jordan Lasley via waivers from the Baltimore Ravens, the club announced Thursday.

Lasley joins the Raiders after spending his rookie season and the 2019 offseason with the Baltimore Ravens. The 6-foot-1, 213-pound receiver has not appeared in an NFL contest but was on the 53-man active roster for all 16 games last season.

Before entering the NFL, the Compton, Calif., native appeared in 29 games at UCLA over three seasons (2015-17), tallying 113 receptions for 1,901 yards and 14 touchdowns. In 2017, he notched one of the most productive seasons by a Bruin in school history, pacing the team with 69 receptions for 1,264 yards and nine touchdowns, while setting program records with three games of 10-or-more receptions en route to honorable mention All-Pac 12 honors.

In a corresponding move, the Raiders have waived WR Brian Burt.

Oakland Raiders Sign DT Anthony Rush

NAPA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent DT Anthony Rush, the club announced Thursday.

Rush, a 6-foot-5, 350-pound defensive tackle, enters his first season in the NFL after spending the last two seasons (2017-18) of his collegiate career at UAB. In 25 games with the program, Rush posted 77 tackles (43 solo), including 20 for loss, two sacks, one interception returned for a touchdown, one pass defensed and two forced fumbles. As a senior in 2018, he set career marks in tackles (43), tackles for loss (11), sacks (two) and forced fumbles (two).

Rush spent two years (2015-16) at Northeast Mississippi Community College before transferring to UAB, recording 73 tackles and four sacks over his time with the school. The Raleigh, N.C. native was a three-star prospect during his prep with Cary (N.C.) High School and was considered a top-20 player in the state after earning first-team All-Southwest Wake Athletic Conference honors as a senior.

Oakland Raiders Sign DT Ethan Westbrooks

NAPA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent DT Ethan Westbrooks, the club announced Tuesday.

Westbrooks, a 6-foot-4, 287-pound defensive tackle, enters his sixth year in the NFL after spending the first five years of his career with the Rams. In 67 appearances with 11 starts, Westbrooks has compiled 79 tackles (53 solo), nine sacks, three passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He has also started in one postseason contest in which he recorded three stops (two).

In his last season with the Rams in 2018, Westbrooks appeared in all 16 contests for the third consecutive campaign. He totaled eight tackles (five), registered one sack and added one pass defensed on the year. In 2017, he set career highs in both starts (nine) and sacks (four).

A native of Oakland, Calif., Westbrooks attended West Texas A&M during his collegiate career, where he earned first-team all-conference honors in 2012 and was named the Ron Lenz Division II National Defensive Player of the Year after tallying 19.5 sacks for the Buffaloes.

In corresponding moves, the club has waived both DT Ronald Ollie and TE Erik Swoope. Both Ollie and Swoope spent the offseason program with the Raiders after signing with the team this past Spring.

Oakland Raiders Sign Butler; Waive Warren

NAPA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent RB James Butler, the club announced Sunday.

Butler returns to the Raiders after spending a portion of his rookie season in 2018 on the team’s practice squad. Butler was also with the team during this year’s offseason program after signing as a reserve/ future free agent this past January. Before playing professionally, he played one season at Iowa after transferring from Nevada, appearing in a total of 47 contests. Over his four-year career, he tallied 699 rushes for 3,712 yards and added 28 scores on the ground, while also registering 53 receptions for 485 yards and three touchdowns.

A native of Bloomingdale, Ill., Butler rushed 91 times for 396 yards and one touchdown as a senior for the Hawkeyes in 2017. With Nevada, he was named All-Mountain West honorable mention two times (2015-16) and earned the team’s Outstanding Offensive Player Award in 2016.

In a corresponding move, the club has waived RB Chris Warren III.

Oakland Raiders Sign WR Pierson-El

ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent WR De’Mornay Pierson-El, the club announced Thursday.

Pierson-El enters his first year with the Raiders, having most recently been with the Salt Lake Stallions in the American Alliance Football league. Before joining the AAF, Pierson-El spent time with the Washington Redskins after being signed by the club as an undrafted free agent, while also making a short stint with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League

During his time with the Stallions, the 5-foot-9, 195-pound wide receiver recorded 36 receptions for 414 yards (11.5 avg.) and one touchdown. Pierson-El’s receptions and receiving yards both led the team through eight contests. 

A native of Alexandria, Va., Pierson-El played four seasons (2014-17) at Nebraska. He appeared in 43 games and recorded 100 receptions for 1,309 yards (13.1 avg.) and added 11 touchdown receptions, while also rushing 26 times for 67 yards. 

In a corresponding move, the Raiders have waived WR Saeed Blacknall. A rookie this past season, Blacknall spent the majority of the 2018 campaign on the club’s practice squad and was signed as a reserve/future free agent this past January.
