Sacramento Republic FC Sign Midfielder Matt LaGrassa

Elk Grove native joins Sacramento Republic FC on first professional contract.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.Sacramento Republic FC have agreed to a contract with free agent midfielder Matt LaGrassa for the 2016 USL season. LaGrassa, an Elk Grove, Calif. native, joins Sacramento Republic FC after playing soccer collegiately at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

“Matt is a young player that we have very high hopes for at the club,” said Sacramento Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “I had the opportunity to see him at Cal Poly and he is a midfielder that is always looking to be on the ball. This is something we want and we feel he will really improve our roster. He is also a local player which is a big plus for us in our efforts to support the growth of local talent for U.S. Soccer.”

LaGrassa joins Sacramento Republic FC after spending the last five years playing at Cal Poly. After redshirting his freshman year, LaGrassa appeared in 77 matches from 2012-2015, starting 57, scoring 18 total goals and recording eight assists. La Grassa graduated from Cal Poly with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology in 2015.

“Being from Sacramento, I am very excited to start my professional career at home,” said LaGrassa. “I think this will be a great opportunity for me as a player in a place where I can make the fans happy, including my family and friends. I believe Sacramento Republic FC is the best USL franchise in the country and the best place for me to continue to grow as a person and a player.”

LaGrassa also played in the PDL with the Des Moines Menace and Ventura County Fusion. He played 1,864 minutes in four years, scoring four goals. The Elk Grove native played high school soccer at Pleasant Grove High School and club soccer at CYSA Cal North ODP.

Sacramento Republic FC Sign Defender Chris Christian

Defender played with Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC and Atlanta Silverbacks FC last season.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.Sacramento Republic FC have agreed to a contract with free agent defender Chris Christian for the 2016 USL season. Christian has played in the USL, NASL and PDL as well as overseas in Ghana and Poland.

“Chris first caught my eye in the two games we played against Switchbacks FC. He played a major role in the matches and was very dominant in the 18-yard box. That was when I first took note of him,” said Sacramento Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle.

Buckle continued, “The minute he become available, we were very interested in bringing him to the club. He is a good defender, a good leader. He is a very powerful center half, although he has a nice left foot on him. Chris gives us a nice balance in the center half position, as well as the holding role in midfield. He is serious about his football and excited to be joining our club.”

Christian joins Sacramento Republic FC after splitting time between Atlanta Silverbacks FC (NASL) and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (USL) in 2015. He scored one goal in four matches for Silverbacks FC including two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup matches, before joining Switchbacks FC on loan. Christian appeared in five matches for Switchbacks FC during their inaugural season, playing 425 minutes.

The 6-foot-1-inch defender also spent time with Liberty Professionals FC of the Ghanaian Premier League and Motor Lubin, a Polish fourth division team. In college, Christian played over 60 matches for Villanova, scoring four goals and recording an assist.

Sacramento Republic FC Re-Sign Midfielder Danny Barrera

SACRAMENTO, Calif.  – Sacramento Republic FC reached an agreement with Danny Barrera to retain the midfielder on the club’s roster for the 2016 season. Barrera originally joined the club midway through the 2015 season.

“I am thrilled that Danny has committed to the club,” said Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “I feel that he is someone that showed us going into the end of last season what he can do. He is a central player for us in the midfield, a creative player. He has flourished and played nearly every match for us since joining the club. He is someone that is capable of unlocking defenses and continuing his career to play at an even higher division.”

Barrera signed with Republic FC on June 6, 2015, appearing in 20 matches, including 16 USL starts and the club’s lone 2015 playoff match. Barrera recorded two goals and three assists in his 1,128 USL minutes and scored his first goal with Sacramento Republic FC, a match-winning goal, against Arizona United SC on June 13, 2015.

Prior to joining Republic FC, Barrera spent three seasons in the NASL, appearing in over 50 matches for the Atlanta Silverbacks, San Antonio Scorpions and Carolina Railhawks from 2012-2015. He scored seven NASL goals. Barrera also appeared in 45 matches for the Ventura County Fusion, scoring 13 goals during his time with the PDL club. As a collegiate player, Barrera appeared in 66 matches for UC Santa Barbara from 2008-2010, scoring 10 goals and recording 22 assists. Republic FC defender James Kiffe and Barrera were teammates for the Gauchos in the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
