SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento Republic FC have agreed to a contract with defender Mike Da Fonte for the 2016 USL season. Da Fonte served as the captain of New York Red Bulls II during their inaugural season in 2015.
“Michael will be an outstanding new addition to the squad and fill a position that was needed,” said Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “I’ve gotten to know Michael, as a person as well as a player, and I really like him and his values. He served as captain of New York Red Bulls II, and as such, will bring great leadership qualities to the club.”
Da Fonte spent the 2015 season with New York Red Bulls II. Da Fonte led Red Bulls II in minutes (2,003), games started (23) and was second in games played (25) in 2015. He also appeared in both of the club’s two USL playoff matches. Da Fonte was named to the USL Team of the Week for his performance in Week 13.
Prior to joining Red Bulls II, Da Fonte spent two seasons playing in Portugal, making 23 appearances with Espinho and 23 appearances with Pedras Salgadas, both of the Terceira Divisão Portuguesa (Portuguese third division). Da Fonte then returned to the United States and made the Red Bulls II roster through a tryout hosted prior to the season.
