Oakland Raiders Sign DE Kony Ealy; Place S Reggie Nelson On IR

ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent DE Kony Ealy, the club announced Wednesday.

A former second-round pick (60th overall) of the Carolina Panthers in the 2014 NFL Draft, Ealy now enters his second stint this season with the Raiders and fifth year in the league after making stops with the Panthers (2014-16) and New York Jets (2017). At 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds, the defensive end has appeared in 62 games over his career with the two clubs, making 19 starts and compiling 90 tackles (53 solo), 15 sacks, two interceptions, 14 passes defensed, six forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. In postseason action, Ealy has appeared in five contests and made one start, notching 11 stops (five), three sacks, one pass defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

In a corresponding move, the Raiders have placed S Reggie Nelson on the Reserve/Injured List. Nelson signed as a free agent in 2016 and started all 32 games in his first two seasons with the club, appearing in a total of 43 contests. Over his 12-year career, he has appeared in 181 contests and made 164 starts, recorded 830 tackles (605 solo), 6.5 sacks, 38 interceptions with one returned for a touchdown, 93 passes defensed, 10 forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries. His 38 interceptions lead all active players in the NFL.

Oakland Raiders Re-Sign Reggie Nelson

ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders have re-signed free agent S Reggie Nelson, the club announced Friday.

Nelson spent the last two seasons manning the secondary for the Raiders, starting all 32 games for the Silver and Black. In 2017, he posted the second-most tackles on the team, totaling 96 stops (71 solo), one interception, five passes defensed and two forced fumbles. Since joining the club in 2016, he has recorded a team-best eight takeaways and was named to his second consecutive Pro Bowl during his first season as a Raider.

Over his 11-year career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Cincinnati Bengals and Raiders, Nelson has played in 170 games and made 157 starts, totaled 820 tackles (594 solo), 6.5 sacks, 36 interceptions with one returned for a score, 91 passes defensed, 10 forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries. Nelson is a two-time Pro Bowler (2015-16), and his 43 takeaways and 36 interceptions since he entered the league in 2007 lead all active players.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pounder was originally drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round (21st overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft. After playing his first three seasons with the Jaguars, Nelson spent six seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals from 2010-15. His stint in Cincinnati was highlighted by a 2015 campaign in which he would lead the league with 10 total takeaways and also tie for the NFL lead with eight interceptions en route to earning his first career Pro Bowl honor.

The Melbourne, Fla., native started 18 of his 25 games over two seasons at Florida from 2005-06. As a senior in 2006, Nelson posted six interceptions to help lead the Gators to a BCS National Championship, earning a first-team All-American selection and the Jack Tatum Award as the nation’s top defensive back.

Oakland Raiders Sign S Reggie Nelson

ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders have signed unrestricted free agent S Reggie Nelson, the club announced Thursday.

Nelson has spent the last six seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals after beginning his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2007-09. He has played in 138 games with 125 starts over his nine-year career, totaling 683 tackles (467 solo), 30 interceptions, 80 passes defensed, nine forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and 6.5 sacks. In seven postseason appearances, all starts, Nelson has registered 38 tackles (33 solo), two sacks and one fumble recovery.

In 2015, Nelson tied for the league lead and set a career high with eight interceptions en route to earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He recorded an interception in five straight games and finished the season with 72 tackles (50), 14 passes defensed and two fumble recoveries.
