Sacramento Republic FC Add More MLS Experience, Sign Defender Julius James

James brings five seasons and over 90 matches of MLS experience to Republic FC roster.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.Sacramento Republic FC have agreed to a contract with Julius James for the 2017 USL season, pending league and federation approval. James played the last four seasons in the NASL, winning the Soccer Bowl in 2014 with the San Antonio Scorpions.

“Julius brings us a great amount of experience,” said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “He has a strong voice and an opinion and he is not afraid of casting that opinion on the game and that is what we want. It will take him a little while to settle in, but he will bring vast experience and a lot of know-how to the back four.”

James played in 95 career MLS matches over five seasons. The defender was originally drafted 9th overall in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC. James played with Toronto, Houston Dynamo, D.C. United and Columbus Crew in his MLS career before moving to the NASL in 2013. He played with North Carolina FC (then the Carolina Railhawks), San Antonio Scorpions and in 2016 with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. James helped the Scorpions win the 2014 Soccer Bowl. James made 68 NASL appearances in his four seasons in the league.

The defender has also featured for the Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Team. James earned his first cap against Guyana on Sept. 3, 2008 and has since made 15 other appearances with his National Team. James is one of four Republic FC players to have capped with their national teams, joining Trevin Caesar (Trinidad and Tobago), Emrah Klimenta (Montenegro) and Jeremy Hall (Puerto Rico).

Republic FC will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 18 when they travel to San Francisco to take on the San Francisco Deltas in their final road friendly of the preseason. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Kezar Stadium. Republic FC will return to Papa Murphy’s Park on Wednesday, Mar. 22 when they take on the San Jose Earthquakes. Sacramento Republic FC Re-Sign Midfielder Danny Barrera

SACRAMENTO, Calif.  – Sacramento Republic FC reached an agreement with Danny Barrera to retain the midfielder on the club’s roster for the 2016 season. Barrera originally joined the club midway through the 2015 season.

“I am thrilled that Danny has committed to the club,” said Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “I feel that he is someone that showed us going into the end of last season what he can do. He is a central player for us in the midfield, a creative player. He has flourished and played nearly every match for us since joining the club. He is someone that is capable of unlocking defenses and continuing his career to play at an even higher division.”

Barrera signed with Republic FC on June 6, 2015, appearing in 20 matches, including 16 USL starts and the club’s lone 2015 playoff match. Barrera recorded two goals and three assists in his 1,128 USL minutes and scored his first goal with Sacramento Republic FC, a match-winning goal, against Arizona United SC on June 13, 2015.

Prior to joining Republic FC, Barrera spent three seasons in the NASL, appearing in over 50 matches for the Atlanta Silverbacks, San Antonio Scorpions and Carolina Railhawks from 2012-2015. He scored seven NASL goals. Barrera also appeared in 45 matches for the Ventura County Fusion, scoring 13 goals during his time with the PDL club. As a collegiate player, Barrera appeared in 66 matches for UC Santa Barbara from 2008-2010, scoring 10 goals and recording 22 assists. Republic FC defender James Kiffe and Barrera were teammates for the Gauchos in the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Sacramento Republic FC Signs Third Year NASL Veteran Midfielder Danny Barrera

Barrera joins Republic FC after spending the last three years in the North American Soccer League (NASL). Barrera appeared in over 50 matches for the Atlanta Silverbacks, San Antonio Scorpions and Carolina Railhawks, scoring seven goals. Barrera appeared in 66 matches for UC Santa Barbara from 2008-2010, scoring 10 goals and recording 22 assists. He and Republic FC defender James Kiffe were teammates for the Gauchos in the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Barrera also appeared in 45 matches for the Ventura County Fusion, scoring 13 goals.
