Sacramento Republic FC Defeat Tulsa Roughnecks FC 3-2

Sacramento Republic FC end their USL goalless and winless streaks as they come away with 3 points from a back and forth 3-2 victory over Tulsa Roughnecks FC at a sold-out Papa Murphy’s Park.

The Roughnecks came out strong in the opening moments of the match as they pounced on their first chance in the 7th minute. Running onto a perfectly weighted through ball, Roughnecks captain Juan Pablo Caffa got behind the Republic defense on the left wing. Caffa drew Republic FC keeper Dominik Jakubek out just a step before sliding the ball across the face of goal to an unmarked Joey Calistri. The midfielder calmly slotted a one-touch left-footed strike past a slow recovering Republic FC defense and Jakubek for the early 1-0 lead.

Republic FC equalized in the 29th minute in the form of a left-footed strike from captain Danny Barrera. The ball was played into the box and forward Sammy Ochoa was able to control it and lay it off for a charging Barrera. The midfielder took the chance in stride and beat Roughnecks keeper Fabián Cerda for the equalizer.

Republic FC wasted no time in jumping ahead in the 31st minute when defender James Kiffe was able to find Ochoa on a near post run. The big forward used his size to seal off the defender as he sent the flick header past a diving Cerda for the 2-1 lead. The two goals in three minutes broke a streak of 592 minutes without a goal for Republic FC in USL play.

The Roughnecks would find an equalizer of their own in the 67th minute. Republic FC defender Julius James was called for a handball in the box and Tulsa was awarded a penalty kick. The captain, Caffa, stepped up to the spot and coolly put his shot past a diving Jakubek who had guessed right.

Republic FC would pull ahead again in the 77th minute, this time for good as Republic FC would score directly off of a Barrera corner kick. Barrera sent a left-footed, out-swinging corner into the box to find an aerial Chris Christian. The Republic FC defender skied over everyone and sent a powerful header on frame. The Roughnecks defense was able to get a deflection on the shot but it was too powerful and ended up in the back of the net, giving the home side a 3-2 victory and a much needed 3 points.

“I’m delighted with the fight“, said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “It was a must win game for us. We didn’t start the game well enough but we showed great character and scored 3 goals.“

Republic FC will hit the road again for a match against Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Sunday, May 28.  Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Starfire Stadium.  The match will be broadcast live on CW31.

Sacramento Republic FC Defeats Tulsa Roughnecks FC 2-1

Goals from Wilson Kneeshaw and Tyler Blackwood prove to be enough as Republic FC extend their record unbeaten streak to 14 consecutive matches and makes them 3-0-0 on the season.

The match was very well contested from the start with neither team asserting their dominance over the other. Roughnecks FC would have the first good look at goal in the 11th minute.  Modou Jadama played Cristian Mata open down the middle of the pitch, giving Mata the one-on-one situation with Dominik Jakubek. Republic FC’s keeper did well though to cut off the angle and push Mata wide right, making the forward’s shot a difficult one.  Mata took a strong shot from the right side of the box, but it went into the side of the net keeping the match scoreless early.

Republic FC had their best chance of the first half in the 36th minute on a counter attack led by Tyler Blackwood and Wilson Kneeshaw.  Blackwood pushed the ball down the middle from the midline all the way to the top of the box before laying the ball off to Kneeshaw on his right.  The forward had a good look at goal from the right side, but a sliding Roughnecks FC defender was there to block the ball away.  A poor clearance gave Republic FC another chance however, with Danny Barrera attempting a header from the left side, but goalkeeper Bryan Byars was there for the save, keeping the match scoreless going into the half.

Republic FC came out quickly to begin the second half, scoring in the 48th minute.  Kneeshaw received the ball near the top right corner of the box before sending it out wide to Hord who was making an overlapping run.  Hord then sent a long ball into the box to Sammy Ochoa who jumped and headed back to top of the six-yard box where Kneeshaw chested down and slotted the ball past Byars and into the back of the net putting Republic FC ahead 1-0.

Republic FC continued their strong pressure in the second half and were rewarded again in the 67th minute.  Danny Barrera had the ball on the right side on the break before sending a cross toward the middle where Ochoa found himself open.  After a bounce, Ochoa hit a one-touch right-footed blast toward goal that looked destined for the near post, that Byars’ saved but only to the waiting feet of Blackwood who followed the play perfectly and the forward simply tapped the ball into the goal, giving Republic FC the 2-0 lead.

Roughnecks FC would pull back a goal in the 80th minute.  A corner by Juan Pablo Caffa was cleared after a play in the box, but only as far as Brady Ballew about 30 yards out in the middle of the pitch.  Ballew hit a strong shot that hit the right corner of the cross bar, but fortunately for the Roughnecks, fell right to the feet of Joey Callistri who hit a strong shot back across goal and into the right side of the net making the score 2-1.

Despite a strong effort by Roughnecks FC to equalize, Republic FC’s defense held strong to see out the 2-1 victory and therefore remaining at the top of the USL Western Conference table.  Republic FC continue their road stretch as they travel to take on Oklahoma City Energy FC on Tuesday, Apr. 11.  Kickoff is 5 p.m. PT at Taft Stadium.  The match will be streamed live at SacRepublicFC.com/match-guide. A brace by Rodrigo Lopez and two assists from Octavio Guzman lead Sacramento Republic FC past Tulsa Roughnecks FC and into first place in the Western Conference.

The match started slow for Republic FC as they looked to settle into the match. In the 9th minute, Tulsa Roughnecks FC got their first real chance at goal. Forward Sammy Ochoa received a well-played through ball in front of the net, but Republic FC goalkeeper Patrick McLain came sliding in to make the save.

Republic FC seemed to take over after the 15th minute, dominating possession and constantly pressuring the Roughnecks’ backline. In the 20th minute, Republic FC broke through the line to take the lead. Midfielder Octavio Guzman received right outside of the box from Gilberto. Guzman took the ball to the right edge of the box before sending a grounded, square cross in front of goal. Forward Justin Braun stepped over the ball, leaving it for David Estrada, who made a run toward the ball off the back post. Estrada took a one-touch shot with his right foot from about three yards out, putting Republic FC ahead 1-0.

Republic FC continued to pressure the Roughnecks in the second half as they looked to double their lead. In the 37th minute, Guzman was again the crucial playmaker for Republic FC earning his second assist on the night. Guzman took the ball through an open midfield before sending a great through ball to Rodrigo Lopez who sent a right footed strike under Roughnecks goalkeeper Zac Lubin and into the lower left corner of the goal to put Republic FC ahead 2-0.

The Roughnecks had one final chance at goal in the 45th minute after a foul in the middle of the field. Former Republic FC midfielder Chad Bond stepped up for the Roughnecks and sent a looping ball toward the back post, but the header went straight to McLain who made the save to keep the score 2-0 going into the half.

Republic FC would start the second half slowly, with the Roughnecks taking early control of the half. In the 48th minute, the Roughnecks would get their first real chance of the second half when midfielder Iarfhlaith Davoren sent a cross to Steven Miller whose header went off the bar. The Roughnecks would gather the rebound but the ensuing shot was deflected just wide left of the goal.

The Roughnecks would find the net in the 72nd minute. Newly signed Tulsa native Cristian Mata scored after receiving a perfectly weighted pass over the top of the defense by forward Sammy Ochoa. Mata, who had come on in the 50th minute cut the Republic FC lead in half, making it 2-1.

However, Republic FC would respond quickly to the goal. Midfielder Danny Barrera took a strong run down the middle of the field before being taken down about 25 yards from goal in the 75th minute. Lopez stepped up the ball and sent a textbook bending shot into the left side of the goal for his second goal of the match, giving Republic FC a 3-1 lead over the Roughnecks.

In stoppage time, Republic FC forward Kaleemullah Khan almost increased the lead further after making a nice touch near midfield. Kaleemullah then took the ball straight through the middle of the defense before sending an open shot toward goal, but Lubin was able to deflect the ball away keeping the score 3-1.

Republic FC defender Emrah Klimenta needed to be helped off the field after coming down awkwardly on his left ankle in the 69th minute. Klimenta will be evaluated over the next day to further evaluate the extent of the injury.

Republic FC will travel to Austin, Texas and take on the Austin Aztex in their next match on Saturday, June 27. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. PDT. The match will be streamed live at SacRepublicFC.com/matchday.
